Bristol 24/7 Blind Date: Cat & Thomas

Receptionist Cat, 26, went on a blind date with business analyst consultant Thomas, 29, where they made liquid nitrogen ice cream. Did it go well or was it a complete meltdown?

Cat:

Have you ever been on a blind date before?

Nope, never. I don’t think I’ve even been on a proper date!

What did you think about this experience as a first date?

It was great! Instead of being sat about just talking, doing an activity meant we could get stuck in. It made it much more relaxed.

What were your first thoughts when you saw your date?

He wasn’t really my type – but that’s me being judgemental. He came across quite blunt, which I actually really liked.

What did you talk about?

We talked about what we did for work, for fun, music, and family.

What was the atmosphere of the date like?

It was awkward to start, but then I think we both sensed that we didn’t have an attraction to one another and we both relaxed. The sorbet we invented was goddamn awful – even the homeless man who was invading our date said how bad our choice of ingredients was. When the Brozen brothers made us their own concoctions, the flavours were peng! They saved our taste buds.

Any moments when you wished you were somewhere else?

Initially, yes. I assumed he was going to be ‘laddy’, but I was wrong. He was pretty cool.

What would you say is the best characteristic of your date?

His determination. His morals were very similar to mine and he came across as a genuine person.

What do you think your date made of you?

What is this goth doing at Brozen and where is my real date?

Is there anything you would change about the evening?

I don’t think so, it was an experience everyone should have a go at.

Did you go somewhere else after?

Yes, we went to a pub nearby as it was tipping it down and freezing and we wanted to chat more 1-2-1. It was much more relaxed, although we couldn’t stay long as he was due to meet his friends. A convenient cut-off.

Were there any sparks of potential…?

No, but that was felt on both sides. Although I appreciated a lot of his personality traits, our interests were just too different.

Will you meet again?

Possibly, but only as friends.

Thomas:

Have you ever been on a blind date before?

Nope.

What did you think about this experience as a first date?

I was intrigued to see how it would work, and it was pretty awesome to see the ingredients turned into ice cream within a minute.

What were your first thoughts when you saw your date?

Blonde hair – that’s a good start!

What did you talk about?

The standard stuff you would expect – what do you do for work, what are your interests.

What was the atmosphere of the date like?

It was hilarious when a homeless guy rocked up and grabbed this awful concoction of an ice cream that we had made. His response summed up what it tasted like perfectly. He said, “It tastes like grass”, and then made one of the weirdest sounds I’ve ever heard another human make. He made off pretty sharpish, leaving the ice cream behind.

Any moments when you wished you were somewhere else?

Nah, it was all cool.

What would you say is the best characteristic of your date?

Pretty easy to talk to, good head on her shoulders and chilled.

What do you think your date made of you?

I hope I made a good impression? She kept saying ‘peng’ which I believe is some sort of Welsh thing? At first, I thought she was trying to imitate a microwave.

Is there anything you would change about the evening?

I wish we had invented a better-tasting ice cream.

Did you go somewhere else after?

Yeah, I didn’t really have much choice as she demanded it. I guess I must have made some sort of impression?

Were there any sparks of potential…?

It sadly wasn’t like New Year Eve fireworks going off, and it’s hard to judge someone when you’re thrown in at the deep end, but she’s a really cool person.

Will you meet again?

She showed me a photo her housemate took where she had passed out drunk at the weekend with a fork in hand. I think on that basis alone, she’d be a good drinking buddy.
